The lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) are the health and safety guidelines to ensure all lifting equipment is used safely in the United Kingdom. All businesses who operate lifting equipment or provide testing & inspection or other services on lifting equipment, must ensure their work complies with the guidelines which form part of the Health and Safety at Work act 1974.

The LOLER regulations serve to ensure all lifting operations are completed to a professional standard by a competent person. To ensure the safety and functionality standards of lifting equipment, LOLER regulations detail a specific inspection and maintenance programme for all lifting equipment. The organisation who own or rent the equipment are responsible for ensuring this programme is fulfilled, the judgement that the equipment is fit for purpose is made by a qualified technician, deemed competent by a professional body such as The Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA).

Standards state that as a minimum inspections must be conducted:

  • Every six months for lifting equipment used for lifting/lowering persons.
  • Every six months for lifting accessories.
  • Every 12 months for all other lifting equipment not falling into either of the above categories

Qualified technicians will provide records of all examinations, this documentation package is what will be inspected by health and safety inspectors who enforce LOLER regulations nationwide. Compliance is therefore mandatory, not only to secure the health and safety of your employees, to ensure your business has conducted itself properly in the event of a lifting-equipment related incident.
