Working together to fight Malaria

Posted 02 May 2018

According to official World Health Organisation (W.H.O) figures, Malaria kills between 0.5 to 0.7 million people each year, the majority in Sub-Saharan Africa. Children under 5 years old are particularly at risk and it is estimated that Malaria kills a child every 2 minutes. In Nigeria alone, medical treatment was required by Swire OS employees or their families on no fewer than 46 occasions during Q1 2018.

The 25th of April is the annual W.H.O World Malaria Awareness Day and staff at Swire Energy Services (Nigeria) Ltd, Swire Energy Services (West Africa) Limited and Prime Power Angola Ltd (an affiliate of Swire Energy Services), mark this important event each year, by providing advice and practical support to all in the workplace. Information leaflets were issued to all employees and visitors to our sites, a Malaria related Safety Moment was included at the beginning of internal meetings and all staff received mosquito nets and insecticide to help protect themselves and their families.

To consolidate the initiatives, detailed presentations were delivered during the Monthly General HSE Meetings held in both Angola and Nigeria.

Malaria doesn’t take a holiday and we must all be vigilant and take adequate steps throughout the year to avoid infection.
