The Swire Energy Services (SES) engineering team completed a significant engineering and refurbishment subsea basket project for a major oil & gas service company.

Our client required a wide range of services including General Arrangement drawings and recertification of units as large as 60ft to DNV 2.7-3 standard. As such they required a vendor with an expertise in DNV standards, as well as a capability to provide a complete scope of services. SES work alongside DNV to develop the best standards for use of offshore equipment, furthermore our in-house team of engineers and technicians can provide broad scopes of services for offshore equipment. As such SES were perfectly positioned to complete this project for our valued client, equipping their units to carry their new specialised tool offshore.

Key challenges

• Client required bespoke engineering documentation package, complete to technical standards.
• 60 ft offshore subsea basket needed an MGW escalation from 42500kgs to 44000kgs.
• Vast unit size meant specialist transportation arrangements were necessary, including a crane.

The SES Service

• SES in-house team of engineers and technicians provided detailed inspection of the unit to inform General Arrangement drawings, also supplied by SES.
• In liaison with DNV, our expert projects team delivered units to DNV 2.7-3 requirements.
• Units were tested across a range of methods including Load test and Non-destructive testing to ensure unit fulfilled specification requirements, all observed and approved by DNV.
• Unit finish was also provided, full blasting and painting, in accordance with NORSOK M-501, as well as manufacture and fit of wire rope slings.
• Full certification documentation package was provided.

Wayne Charles joined Swire Energy Services in August 2004 as a fabrication/welder, during his time in the workshop he mainly focused on refurbishment of our fleet to ensure that our offshore containers were delivered to a high standard of repair, along with the providing fabrication solutions to meet our customers diverse requirements. As Swire diversified into offshore workspaces, Wayne was selected to head up an expanding team focused on the manufacture of offshore workspaces designed to DNV2.7-1,DNV2.7-2 and to meet customers’ exacting requirements in terms of all aspects of product management. During this time Wayne further developed his knowledge and understanding of DNV, NORSOK and NOGEPA standards, which extended his exposure into the subtle differences of product design, coating and lifting requirements required to meet the customers demands and ensure Swire delivered our products to match their needs. During this time Wayne got more involved with direct contact with the end customer. Wayne’s role later extended to overseeing the Rental Yard, responding to customer needs in a dynamic and ever evolving landscape. As Swire Energy Services developed the Integrity Services Offering, this created an opportunity for Wayne to return to his roots by taking on the role as Services Manager: overseeing fleet repairs/refurbishment as well as the highly detailed and rigorous compliance planning associated with modifications, upgrades, refurbishment and new builds, with all work being completed to external customers’ requirements, supporting this with compliant certification and documentation verified by DNV GL/Lloyds. This success of this role is underpinned by ensuring the correct weld procedures and qualifications are in place to carry out all tasks. External verification of completed project is conducted by independent load testing of any new builds or structural repairs, witnessed, where appropriate, by the relevant certifying body.
